Dear Prospective Adoptive Family:

Frank Adoption Center, NC sees adoption as an enormous undertaking and we feel strongly that prospective adoptive parents need to be made aware of the issues and concerns that are ingrained in the adoption process. There for we require that all of our families undergo 20 hours of pre-adoptive education and training.  

In order to complete your 20 hours of educational training we will require each family to participate in the courses and read the literature below:

1. Adoption Learning Partners course "Journey to Attachment" - Go to www.adoptionlearningpartners.org to the Adopting link and then to Domestic Adoption to enroll in this program. Cost for the course is $35. Once you have successfully completed this program, you will be issued a certificate; please be sure you indicate that you want a certificate. Send in a copy of your completed certificate to Michalina Miller or Amy Perry so they can record that you've fulfilled this requirement.

2. Adoption Learning Partners courses - complete 3 additional courses related to Domestic Adoptions. Note: the courses "Creating an Adoption Profile that Works", "Lifebooks" and "Adoption Tax Credit" will not count toward your education hours. Please choose three (3) of the following courses to complete this requirement.

• "Finding the Missing Pieces - Helping Adopted Children Cope with Grief and Loss"
• "Conspicuous Families - Race, Culture and Adoption"
• "Let's Talk Adoption - A Lifetime of Family Conversations"
• "Becoming Your Child's Best Advocate"

Go to www.adoptionlearningpartners.org and then to Adopting and then to Domestic Adoption to enroll in these programs. Once you have successfully completed this program, you will be issued a certificate; please be sure you indicate that you want a certificate. Send in a copy of your completed certificate to Michalina Miller or Amy Perry so they can record that you've fulfilled this requirement.

3. "Therapeutic Training Manual" by Denise L. Best - You will be required to order her training manual from her website, www.ParentingAdoptedKids.com. The cost is $32. Please review the manual and provide to Frank Adoption Center, NC a two-page written summary of what you believe to be valuable and useful from this manual.

4. "Post Adoption Blues: Overcoming the Unforseen Challenges of Adoption" (2004) by Karen J. Foli and John R. Thompson - You will be required to read this book and provide to Frank Adoption Center, NC a one-page written summary of what you believe to be valuable and useful from this book. Cost is approximately $15.

Note: We will indicate in your home study that you have fulfilled the pre-adoptive educational requirements for Frank Adoption Center, NC, thus making you ready to adopt.

This is, more than likely, the biggest decision you will ever face and Frank Adoption Center, NC believes that the more educated and informed you are, the better off you will be. Additional resources on domestic adoption are available through your local library, bookstore, the internet, etc. Of course, our experienced staff is always available to assist you as well.

You will need to complete the 20 hours of preadoptive training prior to your home study being approved. If you have moved from another state and are asking Frank Adoption Center, NC to prepare a home study update for you, you will be required to participate in 20 hours of preadoptive training prior to your home study being approved.
